However, I've been a little behind in this blog. This is due to college, but hopefully I'll put a couple posts during spring break and play more games.

So, far I think my strategic thinking is getting a lot better, because I try to play consistently. I just have to make sure I don't make those huge mistakes. :)David Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-8418762854988327702010-01-29T23:01:00.000-08:002010-01-29T23:10:33.324-08:00Korean insei Na Hyun beat 2 top professionals straight!Korean insei Na Hyun beat 2 top professionals straight!

I've read this on 9dan.com. This 11 year old kid is really good at go. I find it amazing that he can beat two professionals back to back. I'm so weak that he could probably crush me easily even with a 9 stone handicap.

I'm looking at a goal of 1 dan by July in the very earliest, by January by the latest. This article made me realize that despite that jump in strength, I still would be tremendously weak against professionals and inseis.

So I'm asking myself, "Can I play on a competitive level someday?" Perhaps, most likely not, but I think I should give it a shot. I learned the game a few years ago, but I never played consistently enough to have steady progress. However, even if I practice every day, I wonder if that's enough.

Well, I should probably walking on my road to shodan, than just sitting around thinking about it... Away I go!

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-23657937807464632652010-01-24T22:13:00.000-08:002010-01-24T22:17:25.521-08:00Go and the "Three Games"Go and the "Three Games"

It's been awhile since I made a post. This is due to me going back to school, and I'm trying to get everything in control. I haven't played as much go as I have during break, but I try to play at least a game a day. Here's an interesting read on Go compared to two other games; backgammon and chess. It's great, because it's not a novel. The essay is an interesting read when you have time. I would suggest this essay to anyone, but perhaps more towards beginners learning the game so that one can see the difference between Go and other games.David Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-6086569265773654932010-01-18T23:21:00.000-08:002010-01-20T06:08:59.501-08:00Game 27: Death by Fire 2Game 27: 3 Stone Handicap Me(10k) vs Ping(6k)

This was incredible. I challenge this 6k to a three stone handicap game. He changed it, so he got the three stones. So I was playing against a stronger player who got a handicap. I was so mad, but I played calmly (Well at least in the beginning before getting frustrated), and tried my best.

However, I could've easily won the game if I played my best. I think I was a little intimidated that a higher rank had the handicap. However, I don't think my opponent was 6k, because I was able to actually closing the gap.

The game is commented by me below.

(;GM[1]FF[4]CA[UTF-8]AP[CGoban:3]ST[2]
RU[Japanese]SZ[19]HA[3]KM[0.50]TM[1800]OT[1x30 byo-yomi]
PW[Bonaparte]PB[ping]WR[10k]BR[6k]DT[2010-01-19]PC[The KGS Go Server at http://www.gokgs.com/]AB[pd][dp][pp]C[Bonaparte [10k\]: Hello
Bonaparte [10k\]: Good luck
]RE[B+51.50]
;W[dd]WL[1788.045]C[Bonaparte [10k\]: I gave myself the handicap... :(

From here on out, I'm going to look carefully on my game menu so I never do this again.]
;B[cf]BL[1790.587]
;W[fd]WL[1784.137]
(;B[ec]BL[1788.414]
;W[ed]WL[1779.785]C[Thank you for making me stronger.]
;B[fc]BL[1784.904]
;W[gc]WL[1773.299]
;B[gb]BL[1781.124]
;W[hc]WL[1770.846]
;B[dc]BL[1778.752]
;W[cc]WL[1769.121]
;B[cb]BL[1776.999]
;W[db]WL[1764.705]
;B[eb]BL[1772.049]
;W[bb]WL[1763.321]
;B[da]BL[1769.975]
;W[bd]WL[1762.126]
(;B[ce]BL[1767.864]
;W[cd]WL[1758.856]
;B[hb]BL[1764.081]
;W[ic]WL[1755.835]
;B[mc]BL[1760.8]
;W[ci]WL[1750.919]
;B[ef]BL[1757.776]
;W[cl]WL[1745.852]
(;B[ba]BL[1755.916]C[Small move. This applies in real life situation. This includes Texas Hold'em, arguments with friends, and driving. If one loses themselves to anger, they will lose money, friends, and even their life. Go is a game, but it can be used as a tool to see who you are through your game. It is possible to see your own personal weaknesses be the same as your weaknesses in your game.

When I play go angrily, I try to play as aggressive as I can, especially when I lose one of my groups early in the game. In go, groups need to create two eyes in order for them to be not surrounded and captured. When two eyes are not created, the group is called a dead group. Stones that separate groups are called cutting stones. This allows the player to make threats to kill a group that does not have two eyes.

Here is an image of living groups that have two eyes. These groups cannot be captured.

Players who wish to get better at go, work on Life and Death problems. There are problems that require you to make a living a group, and there are also problems that require you to kill your opponent's group. Unfortunately, I was never very good at life and death, which will be obvious in this game.

In this short game. I recently lost my ASR League game against Suai, and then Bazilikan offered to play a game against me. The trouble started when I pincered by white and didn't know how to respond to the peep. Then, it all went downhill, because I did not protect the right cutting point. As a result, I paid a heavy price by losing my group. I did not see clearly, and my group died in gote, which was very frustrating. As a result, I made many moves that I thought were aggressive to try to make up the points. Afterward, I realized they extremely easy to refute, and it was not the type of play I would normally make. Through my anger, I allowed my two groups to die in this game.

However, in the future, I will be more mindful of my temper. So at least, I can give my opponent a decent game.

(;GM[1]FF[4]CA[UTF-8]AP[CGoban:3]ST[2]
RU[Japanese]SZ[19]KM[6.50]TM[1800]OT[10x60 byo-yomi]<br a GameHere's my first post for for this blog.

So, I've decided to put some philosophical musing to the game instead of uploading my games so I can look at my comments in a chronological order. Go has many references to life, and every time I play, I learn another concept to life.

I saw this in a person's profile on KGS (Kiseido Go Server) "If Go is like a war, then chess is a a knife fight in a phone booth." Go is a simple game with few rules compared to chess, but the game is far more complex and difficult to master. Computers can dominate grandmasters in chess, but not against go professionals.

For those who don't know what a go set looks like. Here's a picture below.

I decided instead of explaining the rules. Why don't you play it? Here's the link to the go site where I first learned how to play.
Learn to Play Go

In the future, I hope to write about how go relates to life and vice versa. It's quite interesting and when you play enough, you see a reflection of yourself in the game. The only philosophical thing I learned from chess was "You don't kill pieces, you capture them.... so you can kill them later". (I'm kidding)

For the go players at godiscussion.com, feel free comment on your views of go.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-23739694436922807232010-01-14T18:38:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:48:12.869-08:00Game 25: 4 Stone Handicap Me(10k) vs JavanessGame 25: 4 Stone Handicap Me(10k) vs Javaness

So this is the second game that I played against my teacher, Javaness (Ian Davis). I felt very good about this game, because I performed a lot better than my previous game when I had a six stone handicap. To me, that feels odd, but I guess it shows that I've been getting better.

I'm starting to get a feel for my own style. It's strong attacks with severe moves. I find it kind of interesting. However, I'm looking at other styles to give myself a look into what pros are playing. It's absolutely fascinating.

Anyway, it seems I've gotten out of the habit of going over through my moves on my blog, but I'm kind of lazy. So, I'll start with one and I'll see how it goes.

Move 57 I think I should've hasseled white more, but I was wondering whether having territory between two walls is good. I guess the answer is yes, in the case of the game I played. Over concentration should be what I'm worried about.

Well, I've realized that this will take forever to reach 1000 games, and perhaps maybe I'll be a 1p by the time I finish on the last one. Well... I hope that happens.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-6576001154591200832010-01-13T17:23:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:48:20.310-08:00Game 24: Me (10k) vs Suai (6k)Game 24: Me (10k) vs Suai (6k)

I couldn't believe I won against someone who is significantly stronger. Especially when I lost the last time I played her. This win put me number one in the ASR League G Class. Hopefully my wins will continue in the league.

In my head I knew I had to rely on my opponents weaknesses early. By relying on light and flexible playing, I should have a good chance. Interestingly, I was able to take the lower right corner, rather than just barely surviving. If my opponent played correct life and death, I think I would've lost this game. I'm kind of disappointed that my win was based upon a mistake, but I'm proud of myself for not overlooking it.

I'm going to be a dan in no time, but it's going to be grueling fun work.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-66246622567885481332010-01-12T12:47:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:48:26.647-08:00Game 23: Bonaparte(11k) vs Yuuki (12k)Game 23: Bonaparte(11k) vs Yuuki (12k)

It's been awhile since I made another post. I've been taking a break from playing serious games, and did not review many games for awhile. I played a couple of 9x9 games. Those are always fun. I think this might be a good way to introduce people into the game of go, but I think they might lose interest in it after they see a 19x19 board.

This game was reviewed by Ian Davis (Javaness). I think it wasn't urgent for me for me to have this game reviewed, but it did give some key examples of how to play. I was concerned with three things. Invading a double wing formation, when I should tenuki, and shape. Even though I won this game, I wanted to improve by playing correct moves so that I can come away without playing overly optimistic moves.

I think so far I'm doing well for coming back from a break. I think what I am afraid of is not losing, but rather making big mistakes that I should've been able to see. Anyway, I hope to analyze professional games so I have more feel for how the game should come about.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-83999408077905567892010-01-07T16:28:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:48:32.290-08:00Game 22: 6 Stone Handicap Me(12k) vs Javaness(2d)Game 22: 6 Stone Handicap Me(12k) vs Javaness(2d)

So this is my first teaching game with Javaness. I wasn't sure what was going to happen, but boy, I got whooped in this handicap game. I usually win or at least put up a good fight in handicap games, but this game I was far too aggressive. I think one thing I enjoyed learning about is handling the bottom left corner. My instinct was to cut, but unfortunately I didn't cut his stones.

I will go back into the comments he made, and will come back stronger than ever.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-52341141065527762962010-01-04T18:35:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:48:37.787-08:0038 Games So FarKGS Analytics
I think this will make things easier for me, so I don't have to comment on every single game I play. KGS Analytics allows you to look at your game, and brings up a bunch of useful stats. So far I'm using this to record how many games I've been playing for the past few days. So, I added up December and January, and I found out I played 38 games in a little under two weeks. That's amazing. I never thought it would add up to that. I can't wait to reach 1000 games!

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-14297523894970119092010-01-04T18:05:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:48:44.850-08:00Game 21: 2 Stone Handicap Me(12k) vs Jabuzar(8k)Game 21: 2 Stone Handicap Me(12k) vs Jabuzar(8k)

I lost a lot of ground in the beginning of the game. I started to become behind after giving up my groups on my left side. I'm starting to become a definite fan of shoving weak groups into walls. Through fighting I was able to save my group and kill another group.

Also through this game, I'm starting to understand moves that both defend and attack. I was able to save my group by attacking another group.

This was my first game falling behind early in a handicap game and coming back to win it in the end. I've noticed that I've gotten better at handicap games, because I don't play passive moves anymore, but rather I play attack moves that squeeze my opponent into a small group. Using the additional stones for territory and influence really helps a lot. I win much more with handicaps than without them, even if my opponent is much stronger than I am.

Game 15: 6 Stone Handicap Me(12k) vs Eevee (4k)
Game 16: 4 Stone Handicap Me(12k) vs Eevee (4k)

The third game was a Tiger's Mouth League game. Lance lost 2 games, but won around 5, I believe. I currently won 2, but lost 1. I really want to place first in this league, so I am shooting for getting the number 1 spot.

When we played, I knew that he wanted to create a big moyo. However, he gave me so much territory, the moyo would not do him good. Cutting his stones and connecting mine strategy worked out well. Also, I know that my responses were incorrect, but I think the outcome went out well in this game. However, I was extremely disappointed with myself when I allowed him to make life in the corner. I hope not to do that again in the future.

Game 17: Me(12k) vs Tynogo (13k)

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-75271689150654624782009-12-31T11:01:00.000-08:002009-12-31T11:03:27.592-08:00New Change in PlansI think I won't post every single game onto my blog. I think I will put only the ones worth noticing. One of the games I recently played, I lost because I lost focus on the game. I was winning and killed a big group and then I allowed a cut on the wrong side, which allowed my opponent to win the game. I probably won't post those embarrassing games here.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-26078561959283340722009-12-31T10:16:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:49:21.308-08:00Game 8: Me(12k) vs Maudisdead(11k)Game 8: Me(12k) vs Maudisdead(11k)

This is a game that was reviewed by Javaness, Ian Davis. I liked the comments that he gave me. They were quite constructive, and I was able to see the mistakes in my attacks and the bad shapes that I've created. From hindsight, perhaps this wasn't the best game to show. Maybe it's because I've gotten stronger now, or maybe I've realized my mistakes from his comments.

I'm taking lessons from him, and I look forward to being able to get better in the coming months. Maybe I'll be a 1 dan one day.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-43237621367478698452009-12-29T12:39:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:49:39.530-08:00Game 12, 13, 14I've just recently joined the tiger mouth insei league. It's something for fun, and it'll force me to play more games. Hopefully I'll be in the upper half in my B class. I recently played 3 insei league games and won my first two. The last won, I would've won if I took one more to make my group living in the lower left. Then I would've won.

I'm proud with all three games though because I pressed down on my opponent on the second and third line. They have little territory, while I have a gigantic wall. I think I'm stronger than 12k if I made less stupid mistakes though. Well here are the games.

Game 12: Me (12k) vs kidchaor24 (12k)
Game 13: Me (12k) vs LochNess (10k)
Game 14: Me (12k) vs lance123 (11k)

I enjoyed my openings in this game. Have a 4-4 point, then a 3-4 point that closes the corner. I have an instant living base, and potential for a lot of influence on the outside for the corner. I screwed up with the opening in the third game, but I don't think it affected me too negatively. I played a 3-5 point instead of a 3-4 point. I think that opening has potential for me, but i should see some more games that has that sort of opening. Well, off to play more go!

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-24213780550911217452009-12-29T12:24:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:49:45.318-08:00Game 10: Me(12k) vs Lyson (11k) Game11: Me(12k) vs Minar (11k?)I'm a little bit behind reviewing my games. So, I'll review these two.

Game 10: Me(12k) vs Lyson (11k)
The first game I was frustrated with myself, because I definately should've won the game, because my opponent created a group that is killable. I shifted his group towards my strong areas. Then I messed up on a cut and allowed his group to connect. I lost the game, but this is a lesson to be learned. Kill a killable group or lose. :P

Game11: Me(12k) vs Minar (11k?)
The second game. I made a lot of tenuki, and that allowed him create a living group in the center. The game was very close, and ended in a 2.5 points lost for me. Note to self, attack.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-89404709785101784842009-12-28T13:32:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:49:51.097-08:00Game 9: Me(12k) vs entropie67(12k)Game 9: Me(12k) vs entropie67(12k)

I skipped game 8 for now, because it is currently under review, and I'll have it up soon. So, I have this game that was fairly poorly played, and I learned that I need to make precise moves that are not too agressive or passive. Also this was the first game where I thought my fuseki was quite lacking, and disappointing.

The sgf file above includes the comments that fractic gave on KGS who gave me a review.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-979462635767389782009-12-27T14:57:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:49:57.374-08:00Game 5, 6, and 7These games were pretty quick to play. I won the first and third one, and lost the second one. The second lost was due to a mistake that I made. My opponent took the advantage and cut off my big group on the top side from the rest of the stones.

The first game was a five stone handicap. I had a hard time believing an 8k would be able to beat me with such a large disadvantage. I did not play passively, but I played as usual. I was able to cut of his groups, but I was tremendously impressed with his ability to create living groups with so little space. However, this is probably my fault for not killing them.

The second game had very fast pace, and I was relying on instinct instead of analyzing the board. Even though from hindsight, I could've won the game. I think this was good practice for me to think more on my feet and naturally create good moves.

The third game was a really fun game. I crushed him, but I nearly escaped with my groups and got them connected. Connecting large groups from different areas of the board seem to be second best to a living group. I was able to cut off his stones, and kill them to make my group living. I think I noticed when I was playing him that he really enjoyed territory and making bases that he never had any considerable walls. Which made the game extremely difficult for him for the middle game. I realized how much power there is in these walls and that I should definitely not underestimate them.

The games went quick, but I still need a game to show my teacher to see whether he's the right fit for me or not.

Game 1
Game 2
Game 3

I can't wait to get to double digit games.
David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-8342185172567666362009-12-27T10:56:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:50:04.321-08:00Game 4: 2 Stone Handicap Me(13k) vs Jllaigle(15k)Game 4: 2 Stone Handicap Me(13k) vs Jllaigle(15k)

This game was a very easy win. There were a few moves that were bad, and I realized them right after I played it. So, maybe a little bit more time and I won't make more stupid mistakes. I personally don't want to analyze this one, because the spread was too much. I made a mistake near the end of the game that cost me many points, but I was so far ahead it did not matter.

However, I will talk about my new pet peeve; people who continue to play even though there is absolutely no hope for them. I was able to force his group in the middle upper left to have only one eye, and I told him that. However, he kept trying to capture my groups around it, which would've been futile. Even after the failed attempts he tried to trip me up at many different cutting points where I would've been able to capture the stone easily. I refuted all of his attacks except the one mistake on the bottom. At this point, I must have been 100 points ahead. I was happy I still came out with the win though. I should play more even game from here on out.

David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-22361512223685280772009-12-26T14:15:00.000-08:002009-12-26T14:39:26.262-08:00Game 3: Me(14k) vs Light92(14k)Game 3: Me(14k) vs Light92(14k)

This one game I took more time with my moves and went over the board very carefully. I played white. I think I did very well at attack my opponent's mistakes. I think I'm stronger than 14k if I really look over the board. This is when I realized that I've been playing to quickly and carelessly in the past, and I can get better by simply taking more time.

Move 10 C8. I think this is a good aggressive attacking move that I wanted. The lower left corner is secured and I can use those stones to attack the black stone at C6 as well as the move I've just played.

Move 12 D10 was a move that I was very unsure about. I wanted to take influence on the outside, and make use of sacrificing of my stone at C8. I can't think of any alternatives.

I think black did a good job at playing D7. However, I think it might've been better to just capture the stone, but that's just me.

Move 20 C11 should've been played at F9 to protect a future cut by white. at both E8 and D11.

After move 23, I didn't know what exactly to do. My knowledge of corner joseki faded, so I just tried to play as solidly as I can hoping to land into a joseki that helps me in whole board positioning.

At move 34. I think I should've made a jump out towards the center from the top group since I cannot make it alive.

I think I should've tenuki on move 36. However I think my position is sufficiently grounded on the left side. Also maybe protecting my left group from getting cut to pieces should've been a priority.

If I was black I would've played at L15. M17 seems a bit to slow for me.

After move 51. I liked the sequence despite black having the upper right. I'm wondering if I could've prevented giving black that much in the upper right.

Again at 52. I think it was a good time to make an invasion. Again my corner joseki is pretty bad, and I think he could've killed me.

After move 79. I felt queasy about my lower right group. This is when I knew I have to kill the bottom stones in order to survive and win.

I mistake by black on 93. I would've played at O8 or at H10.

I will stop my review here. I reviewed the end part of the game with my opponent and learned that I played a couple moves that were overplay. However,I think I underestimate my attacking abilities. A shame since I felt personality wise I rather have territory and be completely grounded. Maybe my game will change more in the future. I took more time in this game because I wanted this game to reviewed by Javaness to see whether I like his style, and if I would want to have him as my teacher.

Hopefully I'll win more games with more playing.

3rd game to becoming a shodan!
David DangDavid Danghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14068941124041543912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8749871140245098546.post-70155263598296406792009-12-25T12:16:00.000-08:002010-01-14T19:50:17.170-08:00Game 2: .5 komi Me(13k) vs Odijidja(12k )Game 2: .5 komi Me(13k) vs Odijidja(12k)

Here's a rough game of mine.
